Tidal Forces
  • Tides are the hydrodynamic response of the oceans to astronomical forcing.

 

  • Tides travel as long-wavelength, shallow-water waves; therefore speed of propagation depends on depth.

 

  • Coriolis deflections and existence of landmasses causes the tide wave to propagate around ocean basins as a rotary Kelvin wave.

 

  • Amphidromic systems exist for each tidal component.

 

  • Standing waves and complex amphidromic circulation may exist in channels or partially enclosed basins.
