What is Magnetism?

Definition: Magnetic fields surround magnetic materials and electric currents and are detected by the force they exert on other magnetic materials and moving electric charges. The magnetic field at any given point is specified by both a direction and a magnitude (or strength); as such it is a vector field. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_field)

Magnetic field lines flow from a Magnetic North Pole to a Magnetic South Pole

Magnetic field lines generally flow out of the Geographic South Pole and into the Geographic North Pole, meaning that the Earth could be viewed as a giant bar magnet with its Magnetic North Pole near Antarctica and its Magnetic South Pole near northern Canada.

The Earth rotates on its axis tilted from its orbital plane
