In Starwars blasters are represented as the space version of our modern day guns.  That is, they are metal things that resemble guns, which you can carry in a holster or belt and are generally used by people to kill each other.  The chief difference between blasters and guns is the rather obvious fact that guns shoot bullets which cause a lot of blood while blasters shoot out a beam of bright glowing stuff which causes burns but without the nasty bloody mess.

Blasters come in an even greater verity than do Lightsabers.  However, like Madonna, Britany Spears, Lindsey Lohan, and Mylie Cyrius, they are all pretty much the same thing except with different shapes, colors, and levels of intensity.
