There have
been several stories about the true origin of beer
pong. Every story is similar in nature having
started in the college fraternity environment and
what not. The truth is beer pong like any old
drinking game was created on accident and has
adapted to what it has became today, over the
decades. It all began in 1955 at Dartmouth
University with a Ping-Pong game between two
friendly classmates. It was common that the students
would drink beer and play a game of Ping-Pong to
pass the day. On the return Todd Todsworth placed
his drink on the table to return the ball and as you
guessed his opponent sank the shot into his cup.
They had a fascination with the cup shot so they
placed a few more cups on the table and aimed
directly for them. They named the game Dartmouth
Pong and the game instantly became popular. The game
spread like a wildfire through all neighboring
university. Each university made up their own unique
house rules and twist and tweaks to the game. It
wasn’t until the 1980 when the pong paddles were
tossed and the balls were thrown by hand. The news
about this new way of playing Dartmouth ball
traveled quickly across the nation. In the late
1980’s the game changed names to just simply Beer
Pong and the game simplified to a set of standard
rules. Today the game is played the same way with
just a few alterations with house rules.
