What is Backdraft?

Backdraft according to the NFPA is:
"The explosion of heated gases that occurs when oxygen is introduced into a space within a burning building where the oxygen has been depleted by the fire."

The explosion is usually caused by firefighters trying to enter the structure in order to put the fire out. If the firefighters do not recognize the potential for backdraft and take the proper precautions, serious injuring or death could occur to them and fellow firefighters.
