The Force

What is the Force you might ask? Our old friend couldn't say it any better... "Well, the Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together." - Obi-Wan Kenobi The force is an extraordinary tool that the sith and the jedi both use in their favor to overcome the greatest of obstacles. This energy field can be used for many things. For example, it can lift objects ranging from apples to full sized space ships, and if you are the sith you can shoot lighting out of your fingertips! If we refer to the clip below you can see that Yoda, a jedi master, is able to lift this X-wing from a swamp. So how strong is the force of the Force you might ask? With the use of the formula F=MA (Force = Mass * Acceleration) we can calculate the force of the Force of Yoda lifting this X-wing.The X-wing’s mass was never explained in the movies but the length was said to be 12.5 meters. If we take an F-22 which is 19 meters long and weighs 19,700 kg, we can use it as reference to estimate the mass of the X-wing to be about 12,000 lbs or 5443.1084 kg. Now knowing the mass of the X-wing all we need to know is how fast Yoda was lifting it and we can determine how strong the force of the Force really is! The gravity of Dagobah, the planet that Yoda is on when he lifts the X-wing, is 0.9g, so the acceleration due to gravity would be 0.9*9.81= 8.829 m/s^2 on Dagobah. We can use these two values to calculate the force of the Force Master Yoda used to lift the X-wing: (5443.1084 kg)*(8.829 m/s^2)= 48,057.204 N. This is the equivalent to lifting 48 people that weigh about 220 pounds! The Force is strong with this master jedi!
