Energy has always been a requirement for human survival and expansion, and while most of the energy we use today comes from various fossil fuel sources, the original source of that energy was the sun, which plants and animals converted into chemical energy. A massive amount of solar energy radiates down on us each day, far more than we can capture and put to use, however even that vast amount is nothing compared to the total output of energy radiated off of the sun. Most of that energy dissipates into space in every other direction and is completely out of our reach.

A suggestion to take advantage of this untapped energy was put forward by the physicist and astronomer Freeman J. Dyson in 1960.

What Dyson suggested, was the idea of surrounding the sun in a hollow spherical structure that would capture energy radiating out in every direction in order to take advantage of the full potential of the star.
