Radiation
is
the third type of heat transfer and life on this
earth would not exist
without it.One of the largest sources
of radiation on earth is the sun.Heat
from the sun is a result of electromagnetic waves
traveling through space and
carrying energy to the earth.
Radiation can occur through solids or in a vacuum
and is emitted by all objects made up of matter.Radiation itself is made
up of electromagnetic waves that are generated by
oscillating electric charges
in the atoms that form the objects. These electromagnetic waves carry energy
from one object to another (Knight 2008).
The relationship of
net radiation from hot objects is called the
Stefan-Boltzmann law. This law states that the
total radiant heat
energy emitted from a surface is proportional to
the forth power of its
absolute temperature (Knight 2008).
