Basically the Tesla Coil, invented in 1891, is a massive transformer that takes a low voltage input and rapidly outputs a high voltage, high frequency, low amperage power. This converts the voltage into such a high energy, that it is able to create plasma, which are the sparks of electricity that we see, such as lightning.  It it this technology that he envisioned would revolutionize the world in means of energy transference.  Tesla wanted to take this coil, put them all over the world and create wireless electricity transmission. In 1901, Tesla began to work on what became known as the Wardenclyffe Tower, located at Long Island, New York.  The tower, which was a staggering 187 feet tall, would essentially turn the Earth into a global dynamo, which would then be able to project the electricity generated to any point on the globe.  However, JP Morgan, the benefactor of the project, stopped financially supporting Tesla due to the fact that anyone could tap into the electricity.  This was Tesla's ultimate goal: worldwide free energy.  JP Morgan did not see it this way because he would not be able to meter everyone's electricity usage, ergo he would not profit from it.  The tower was demolished in 1907 for "wartime safety", although the base still stands today.
