Flute
The flute has
a rounder head joint as well as lip plate. The
body contains keys which are pressed in order to allow
the air to flow through the instrument, changing its
pitch.
The foot joint contains more keys which can further open
the airflow of the instrument. Though there are many types
of flutes, the most typical one, shown here, is the
side-blown
flute.
Oboe
The oboe has a double reed rather than a lip
plate.
It is open at one end, where the double reed is, and
closed at the
other end, where the bell is. Just like the flute, the
keys are
used to allow the air to
flow through their cone-shaped air
columns, giving them different pitches. The tone hole
plates are used to construct the oboe and connect the
upper
and lower sections. Unlike the other keys, the
octave keys
are used to drastically alter the pitch of the oboe by
about
eight notes or so.
Clarinet
The clarinet commonly comes in three
different types: the normal
clarinet, the soprano clarinet, and the contrabass
clarinet. All clarinets
come with a single reed, however it tends to swing
in and out
depending on the air pressure exerted on it. At a
high air pressure,
it is able to function like a double reed. Most
woodwind players can
use a single set of fingers to play a single
octave, however, the clarinet
uses twelve buttons before it continues on to the
next set of notes.
Saxophone
Just like the clarinet, there are
different types of saxophones including
the soprano saxophone, the contrabass
saxophone, and the alto saxophone.
When people think saxophone, it is the alto
saxophone that usually comes
to mind. It has a single reed like the
clarinet, but a conical bore like the oboe.
In fact, it has the largest bore angle of all
woodwind instruments, allowing it to
have a much higher volume. The keys act
similar to any other woodwind
instrument, although due to the size of the
saxophone, the sizes of the keys
are large as well.
