Introduction to the Physics of Adhesives

  • Also known as glues or cements, adhesives function by several mechanisms.
  • Adhesives can attach themselves by mechanical means, where the adhesive infiltrates the pores of the substrate, or by chemical means.
  • Chemical bonds can form between the adhesive and substrate, electrostatic forces can hold substances together, and van der Waals forces can develop between molecules, holding the substances together.
