Common Types of Adhesives:
Adhesive Type
Sources/Properties
Common Uses
Natural Rubber
Consists of polymers of the organic compound isoprene.
Commonly harvested in a form known as latex.
Pressure sensitive adhesives
Silicone
Adhesive and sealant that is silicon based rather than carbon based.
Sealants. Adhesives work in contact with petroleum.
Animal Glue
Sourced from animal byproducts, such as bones, blood, and hooves.
Water soluble.
Binding of abrasives in sandpaper. Sizing or varnish.
Starch
Sourced from plants, such as corn and maize.
Corrugated cardboard adhesive.
Polyurethane
Very flexible adhesive.
Used in flexible applications, such as the bonding of soles to shoes and in food packaging.
Polyvinyl Acetate
Synthetic rubber polymer formed by the polymerization of vinyl acetate monomer.
Common white glue or wood glue. Book bindings and carpentry.
