Feeding, The Echelon Formation and Physics

  • The echelon formation is a half V and the whales swim slightly offset from each other to create vortices
  • This feeding technique allows for minimal effort, but with a huge return for each consecutive whale in the pod
  • The whales form vortices, much like tornados, and the krill or plankton are pulled in and then funneled into the whales mouth
  • Each consecutive whale gets more food as the vortex become stronger and more food is pulled in
  • Vortices are something scientists are still trying to understand, so to see nature using it to it's advantage shows that there is still a lot to learn out there
