Feeding, The Echelon Formation
and Physics
- The echelon formation is a half
V and the whales swim slightly offset from each
other to create vortices
- This feeding technique allows
for minimal effort, but with a huge return for
each consecutive whale in the pod
- The whales form vortices, much
like tornados, and the krill or plankton are
pulled in and then funneled into the whales
mouth
- Each consecutive whale gets more
food as the vortex become stronger and more food
is pulled in
- Vortices are something
scientists are still trying to understand, so to
see nature using it to it's advantage shows that
there is still a lot to learn out there
