Baleen
- These
plates act as a filter for the bowhead whale
and never stop growing throughout their
lives, but are constantly fraying and
breaking off
- The
baleen allows water to flow out in between
plates, but catch the small plankton, shrimp
and other small animals they eat
- Because
of their size they are almost always eating
which is known as skim feeding or swimming
with their mouths open
- The
natives are still allowed to hunt them for
subsistence living and will make jewellery
or other trinkets from the baleen
