The Art of Shooting
Form Shot
Stephen Curry is considered
one of the best shooters to ever play the
game of basketball, the picture to the right
explains a little bit of how he uses
different aspects of physics to do so. To
start the shot process a force is applied
from the shooters lower body compressing
like a spring, converting potential energy
into kinetic energy. Energy is transferred
through the shooters body until a force is
applied to the ball. Newton's third law
takes action at this point as the ball puts
an equal and opposite reaction force. An
ideal shot has back rotation with high
angular velocity to create a softer touch
when it hits the rim.

Arc on a
Shot
Great shooters all have
one thing in common, and that is a high
arching shot. As the picture illustrates
to the right, the higher the arch on the
shot, the bigger the area is for the ball
to go in the basket. While shooting the
ball straight up in the air gives the ball
the biggest target to make it in the rim,
the best angle to shoot a basketball is
around 45-52 degrees. This gives the
shooter control of the basketball and
gives the ball a bigger target to make it.
