The Magnus effect (often called the Magnus force and named after its 1852 discoverer Gustav Magnus) is a lift force (insert citation) . The Magnus Effect is what allows curve balls to curve, as well as ping pong balls. In most entry level physics courses air is neglected when talking about projectiles to make the problem simpler, in actuality there is air all around us and it must be accounted for. The Magnus Force is a lift force which allows sports players to bend the flight of a ball. The video below demonstrates the effects of the Magnus Effect perfectly. One can notice the ball float perfectly and make and lift upwards because he put a backspin on the ball to make the ball curve downwards one would put topspin on the ball. |
