An Elliptical Orbit
This photo illustrates how planets in our solar system
orbit our Sun.  The planet is depicted as the yellow
dot at the bottom right, while the Sun is located
at the left focus.

Kepler's First Law of Planetary Motion:

*All planets move in ellipses with the Sun at one of the foci*

Thanks to previous observations by Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, Kepler was able to introduce the

idea that the orbits of planets around our Sun are elliptical, and the Sun rests at one focus in the

ellipse  .With his first Law of Planetary Motion, Kepler described how the planets in our solar system

orbit the Sun in a non-circular path.
