Again, why does this happen? Well, Judy Amygdala has the answer:

"It's largely about blood pressure. You get back-flow in an IV line when the blood pressure inside that vein is greater than the pressure in the IV line." https://punchingjudy.wordpress.com/tag/iv/

This also has a pretty quick fix. If you notice blood backing into the IV line, just raise the IV bag or lower the IV site.
