When mounting the wings onto an airplane, the angle of the
wing must be considered. Just having the wing vertical
does not create much lift as to having it tilted upward
slightly. The angle the wing is positioned, or the angle
of attack, is important to consider when a plane takes off
as well as the plane needs enough lift to leave the runway
and quickly reach its cruising altitude. Increasing the angle will create greater lift as the velocity of the air increases causing the pressure to decrease. This results in the net force on the wing to increase up, generating more lift. If the angle is to great, the air that passes over the wing will start to create an unstable airflow, causing downward vortexes of air. Even though the lift is near the same as before, this drastically increases the drag and can lead to the plane stalling. |
