introduction
"Martial arts are codified systems and traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, entertainment, as well as mental, physical, and spiritual development"(Wikipedia).Today there are over 5,000 different types of martial arts being studied around the world, ranging from spiritual to self-defense training.
Martial arts can be broadly divided into five different fighting style.
Striking- Primarily focus on attacking or defending by utilizing their kicks, punches, knees, and elbows. A few striking style includes:
- Karate
- TaeKwonDo
- Muay Thai
Grappling- Primarily focus on bringing the opponent down with throws and utilizing their submission hold. A few grappling style includes:
- Judo
- Wrestling
- Russian Sambo
low impact- Primarily focus on breathing techniques, body fitness, and the spiritual development with chi. A few low impact style includes:
- Tai Chi
- Baguazhang
Weapon Based- A type of martial art that incorporates weapons into their system.
A few weapon based style includes:
- Kenjutsu
- kendo
- kyudo
Hybrid- A mix of everything, striking, grappling, low impact and weapon based.
A few hybrid style includes:
-MMA
-Jeet June Do
-kajukenbo
Looking further into Martial arts, I will be explaining some of the dynamics of certain styles and analyze why their pattern of punches and kicks can be so lethal.
