Magnetism of Minerals

There are a few minerals that react when there is a magnetic field placed near it. There are some that are attracted to it and there is actually one mineral by the name of bismuth that is actually repelled from any magnetic fields. This is called diamagnetism in which bismuth is the only mineral with that property. The minerals that are attracted can be put into two categories; there is ferromagnetism which describes minerals with a strong attraction to magnetic fields and then there is paramagnetism which describes minerals with a weak attraction to magnetic fields. The main minerals that categorized into ferromagnetism is magnetite(of course) and pyrrhotite. The minerals that are put into the paramagnetism are platinum, hematite, and franklinite. The main reason for a lot of these minerals to be magnetic is the Fe in there chemical structures. Below is a video that shows bismuth propeties between two magnets and how it repels from each.
