Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American
astrophysicist who was born October 5th, 1958 in New
York City. Neil grew up in the New York city
public school system and both of his parents were
scholars. He admitted to having a very strong
interest in the stars and astronomy at the age of nine
and began engulfing as much information as he could on
the subject. By age fifteen he had made a name for
himself in the scientific community and started
delivering lectures. He eventually chose to major
in physics at Harvard University, where he was not only
highly involved in academics, but also wrestling,
rowing, and dancing. Neil received his Bachelor of
Arts in physics from Harvard in 1980 and soon thereafter
attended the University of Texas at Austin, where
he received a Master of Arts in Astronomy in 1983,
and also met his future wife, Alice Young. To
further his education, Tyson had a short stint of being
a lecturer at the University of Maryland from 1986 to
1987, but ultimately decided to continue his schooling
at Columbia University. At Columbia University,
Neil recieved a Master of Philosophy degree in
Astrophysics in 1989 and finally, his doctorate in the
same subject of study in 1991. By this time, Neil
now had the proper education to take the scientific
community by storm. Present day: Neil is still highly involved in the scientific community and resides in New York City with his wife and two children. |
