The evolution of our knowledge of the atom has been well documented throughout history. Atoms are often referred to as the "building blocks" of matter, and rightly so. Indeed, they serve as the very essence of what makes up our universe. This website will provide a brief, rudimentary synopsis of the history of the atom from the time of the Greeks until the early 1900s. Specifically, it will address the major developments, ideas, and experiments from important scientific figures beginning with Democritus and ending with Chadwick's discovery of the neutron. Furthermore, the website will attempt to explain the fundamental connection between physics and our current understanding of the atom.
