High Schoolers Can Best Prepare for Peace Corps
by Studying French and Spanish

As Peace Corps Week approaches, the Peace Corps Regional Office would like to thank all of the RPCVs who will be doing presentations at local high schools and community groups. We would also like to tell you about an ongoing need of Peace Corps host countries, which we hope you can share with the high school students you meet.

Many Peace Corps assignments these days require volunteers who can speak French or Spanish. For French-speaking countries in Africa, we need volunteers who have taken two years of high school-level French or one year of college-level French. And to be considered for Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America, volunteers must have studied four years of high school-level Spanish or two years of college-level Spanish.

Although we get many highly qualified applicants every year, we still have a hard time filling these assignments in Africa and Latin America. So, when you talk with high school students who are dreaming of joining Peace Corps after college, please tell them that a great way to prepare themselves for Peace Corps is to take French or Spanish classes now. While it won’t guarantee them an assignment in Africa or Latin America specifically, it will allow them to qualify for those positions. This means that when it comes time to find them a placement, they will have more options and an easier time finding the assignment that’s best for them.

If you are still looking for high schools where you might speak, register with Peace Match online at www.peacematch.org. Run by the National Peace Corps Association, Peace Match will help you get connected with interested, local high schools. The Peace Corps Regional Office greatly appreciates all that RPCVs do to help spread the word about Peace Corps, and we honor your commitment to the third goal. With your help, this year’s Peace Corps Week will be the best ever. We thank you!
