2003 Annual Report

NORTHERN ALASKA PEACE CORPS FRIENDS (NAPCF)

 ANNUAL REPORT

January—December 2003

General

We have completed our fourth year as an affiliated group with a NPCA dues-paying membership of 19.  During this year we continued to be involved in community and educational activities and continued with fundraising efforts.  As a result of the work of two of our members the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) recently signed an agreement with the Peace Corps making UAF a partner university in the Peace Corps’ International Masters Program.

Specific Activities

  • During 2003 NAPCF held 10 monthly meetings.  Most of these included slide presentations by various returned RPCVs.  Some were potlucks held at the homes of various RPCVs.

  • We assisted the Peace Corps with its annual recruitment drives (March, September and November 2003) in the Fairbanks area.  Several of our returned volunteers participated in a slide presentations for the community at the public library.  We now are doing all of the recruitment drives in the Fairbanks area for the Peace Corps and receiving a small fee for our efforts.  The Peace Corps is unable to justify the expense of sending their recruiters to Alaska.

  • We interacted with and counseled 3 perspective Peace Corps volunteers in the Fairbanks area by inviting them to our meetings and making ourselves available to answer questions at other times.  Our activities also involved maintaining contact with several volunteers now serving overseas.

  • On October 18th we co-sponsored a half-day International Friendship Day event at a local recreation center.  The event included cultural events and sales of food and crafts.

  • We raised $467.95 by selling the Wisconsin RPCV international calendars.

  • During 2003 our group contributed funds to the following causes:  Library in Nepal ($100), Water Conservation Project in the Philippines ($100), Exchange Teacher from Thailand ($150).

  • During Peace Corps Days in March we visited 3 classes at West Valley High School in Fairbanks.

  • Throughout the year our volunteers presented Peace Corps related programs to the following groups:
