Microwave ovens are now a fixture in American kitchens
and offices. People use them to warm up leftovers, heat water to
make tea, and defrost butter. But what happens to heat the food
inside them? A microwave oven produces something called an
electromagnetic wave that heats food when it touches it, in the same
way that the sun's light (also an electromagnetic wave) can heat your
skin.
