How a microwave oven works


Microwave ovens are now a fixture in American kitchens and offices.  People use them to warm up leftovers, heat water to make tea, and defrost butter.  But what happens to heat the food inside them?  A microwave oven produces something called an electromagnetic wave that heats food when it touches it, in the same way that the sun's light (also an electromagnetic wave) can heat your skin.
