As you can see in frame 10, the spring to the left of the latch represents the spring that keeps the latch firmly in the door jam when not acted upon by the door knob. It is also the only force (aside from friction) that resists the twisting movement of the door knob & spindle. The equations for finding the necessary amount of force a hand would need to apply to any door handle to turn it are shown below.
