The Internet's Infrastructure

Even though the Internet's widespread use is a fairly recent phenomenon, the speed with which it has become a seemingly indispensible part of our lives is impressive. Howerver, like most technology that is so ingrained into peoples' lives, the logistics of such a massive system is rarely considered by most people. This website will focus primarily on the technology and physics behind the physical cables that connect nations across oceans.

These cables are called Submarine Communications Cables. There are over 200 submarine cables currently in existence, and they connect each of the continents except for Antarctica. Currently, the cables are generally made with several different materials, and the core that actually sends the signals is made out of optical fibers.
