Permanent Magnets

A permanent magnet will keep its magnetism for a long period of time. The change in magnetism depends on how strong they are, the temperature and the material they are made of. Magnetite is found in nature but is generally weak. Alloys are a common type of magnet that are made out of combinations of iron, nickel and cobalt.

Temporary Magnets

Temporary Magnets works like a permanent magnet but over time losses its magnetism by losing its magnetic field. An example would be a paper clip, or other soft irons that can be turned into magnets.

Electromagnets

An electromagnet is a tightly wound coil of wire with an iron core. When current is going through it, it acts as a permanent magnet. Changing the amount of current passing through the magnet changes the strength of the magnetic field.
