By any
standard Carl Gauss had a very full family
life. Married twice his first wife, Johanna Osthoff died an early death
in 1809
which sent Carl into a depression. This depression was compounded with
the
death of one of his children, Louis, which followed Johanna’s death
only by a
year. With Johanna, Carl Gauss had three children: Joseph (1806–1873),
Wilhelmina (1808-1846) who was considered the most talented
out of all of his children and Louis (1809–1810).

Carl Gauss married again after his first wife died
to a friend of hers
named Friederica Wilhelmine Waldeck or Minna for short. Though the
happiness of
their marriage is not clear they did manage to have three children
together:
Eugene (1811–1896), Wilhelm (1813–1879) and Therese (1816–1864). Eugene
ended
up immigrating to the United States and left on bad terms with his
father. He
settled in St. Charles, Missouri and eventually became a very well
respected
member of the community. Wilhelm later moved to the United States as
well and
became quite wealthy from the shoe business in St. Louis. Tragically
Gauss’s
second wife Minna died in 1831 after a long illness. Because of this
his daughter
Therese took over the house hold and cared for Carl until his death.
She later
married.
