Surfing was most likely developed by the Polynesians some 3 thousand years ago when fishermen would ride waves back into shore with their catch as an efficient means of transporting their fish. As Christian missionaries arrived from England the sport of surfing was discouraged and its popularity diminished.  A surfing resurgence has taken place since then, and it is once again an integral part of Hawaiian and Coastal culture.
