Hoisting
systems are very important in a mine. They carry there load in a skip
or cage that travels through a shaft. The shaft may be vertical or at
and angle. It is most common for the hoist to operate in a vertical
shaft. Shafts can goes as far down as thousands of feet deep into the
earth. Mines shafts use hoisting
systems to transport ore, waste, to the surface. They also carry materials, equipment and
personnel up to and from the mine. They are designed to the the:
- Production rate
- Depth of shaft
- Number of levels to be
reached
There are many different layouts in
hoist equipment. The two common types of hoists are drum and friction.
Drum hoists stores the rope at the top of the shaft. Friction hoist
passes the rope through a drive wheel but does not store it on a drum.
