Round Offs
physics-of-sport.net
To execute many
tricks and preform a line of tumbling skills, a gymnast must gain a
significant amount of speed to properly execute the tricks. To do
this they use a simple skill called a round off. The round off
produces torque which is the perpendicular distance to the axis of
rotation times the force applied on that axis. The lever like
movements produce a torque which allows the gymnast to do more
somersaults and twist in his or her routine. Torque plays the
biggest role in gymnastics on physics terms because it is how gymnasts
get the force needed to do all the crazy stunts.
