Tire Variants
Purpose-Built Construction
Modern tires come in numerous shapes and sizes for a wide range of applications and styles, each with tread patterns developed for having the most traction in a given condition. Common categories for modern car tires are as follows:
- High Performance Tires: Designed for use at higher speeds and use a softer tread compound for improved traction and better handling.
- Snow Tires: Designed for better traction in snowy or muddy conditions. Snow tires feature a softer tread compound with high amounts of sipes. Some snow tires are fitted with metal studs which greatly improve traction in icy conditions.
- All Season Tires: These tires compromise between a tire developed for summer conditions and one developed for winter conditions. As such, they are neither an excellent summer tire nor an excellent winter tire, but are more convenient than owning two separate sets of tires and perform adequately in most conditions.
