The Reel

  • When you hook into a large fish, it will usually run and pull out line. The energy gets stored in the line and rod, which is transferred into heat by the drag or braking system.  A drag is a braking mechanism that can increase or decrease the resistance against the fish. It's like driving your car while adjusting the emergency brake.  The more brake, the more work your vehicle has to do to overcome that resistance.  With no resistance, the fish will swim for an extremely long time without getting tired.  With 100% resistance and if the opposing force is strong enough, the weakest member of the whole system will break.  Usually the tippet or one of your knots will break first, but in the worst circumstances your rod will break.
