- 1896- Gottfried
Daimler and Rudolf Diesel, German inventors design the first
supercharger for an engine
- 1905- A
Swiss, Dr. Alfred Buchi was granted the patent for the first
supercharger driven by exhaust gas pulses.
- 1910- General
Electric begins to manufacture turbochargers.
- 1915- Dr. Alfred
Buchi develops a turbocharger for diesel engines.
- 1918- An engineer
for General Electric, Dr. Sanford Moss, introduced aviation related
turbocharging.
- 1920- Lt. John
Macready fly a LaPere bi-plane with a turbocharged 12-cylinder engine
and brakes the altitude record, flying 33,113ft above sea level.
- Late 1940's- Cliff
Garrett committed to design a turbocharger that would be applicable to
small engines.
- 1962/1963- The
first turbo powered passenger cars are produced. They are Chevrolet
Corvair Monza and Oldsmobile Jetfire.
- 1970's- Turbocharging
is introduced to Formula 1 racing.
- 1978- The first
turbo-diesel car is produced; Mercedes-Benz 300 SD.
- 1981- Second
turbo-diesel car is produced; VW Golf.
