  • The drilling itself is done through a combination of the turning pipe, and (usually) rotating heads on the bit. The pipe is attached to to hexagonal pipe, called the kelly, and the kelly is what is rotated by the rotary table. An engine turns the rotary table.

 

  • The raising and lowering of the pipe is done through a combination cables, winches, and ballasts. The mud pump, mudscreen, and mud pit are all a part of a system unique to drilling. Drilling utilizes a sytem that sends pressurized lubricant down into the sealed system. The lubricant not only drives the spinning parts of the bit, but also maintains hydrostatic pressure downhole, to keep the pressurized crude from coming up during the drilling process.
