Pink Floyd and Physics
Is it a cosmological coincidence or a sign of unity between science and art?
Ever since quantum physics arrived on the scene, psychadelic gurus have been trying to stick it in the same bag as eastern mysticism. With eastern mysticism came the whole psychedellic culture, artists and all. Certainly a rigid science such as physics doesn't belong with a group of religious monks and communist hippies searching out the meaning in life in the fashion of a rebellious teenager?
The psychadelic era was to society what Modern Physics was to Classical Physics. And overthrow, a revolution of thought. Our perceptions and intuitions are continously challenged as we explore deeper and deeper levels of physics and society both. Science and Art are continually oppressed by the powers they threaten with their wreckless regard for authority.
Galileo is perhaps the most famous of the ancient natural philosophers to piss of his local Tyrranical Authority in a search for truth. He believed that the Earth revolved around the Sun, challenging the preconceived notion upheld by the Catholic Church that Earth was the center of the universe.
As Thomas Young discovered the wave properties of light and Einstein revealed Relativity, the stone-set laws of Newton (also known as a Tyrranic Authority) were quickly set on the back burner for lowerclass college students to gnaw on while waiting for a taste of the modern physics.
Fang Lizhi , a Chinese physicist, (who you can read about in the Prejourney) found himself battling an extremely Marxist Chinese government when he made the bold decision to take the Big Bang and other elements of relativity seriously in the late 60's.
