Robert Hooke contributed greatly to many fieds of science all throughout his life. The following is a list of many of these contributions.

  • Founded the field of Microscopic Biology.
  • He was the first to coin the word 'cell'.
  • Designed and built the air pump used by Robert Boyle.
  • Defined Hooke's Law.
  • Devised one of the best microscopes of his time.
  • Invented the Universal Joint.
  • Invented the iris diaphragm.
  • Constructed the first prototype of a respirator.
  • Discovered the red spot of Jupiter and first person to report the rotation.
  • First to realize and conceptualize the wave properties of light.
  • Invented a method of telegraphy.
  • Invented a diving bell.
  • Established the thermo-metrical zero at the freezing point of water.
  • Demonstrated the elliptical paths of planets in their orbits around the sun.
  • Invented an ear trumpet.
  • Founded the field of Meteorology.
  • Invented the anchor escapement in clocks.
  • Invented the Circular fly wheel used in many analogue watches and clocks still today.
  • First person to conceptualize the theory of gravity and its inverse-square effect.
  • Argued that light was in fact waves and not particles. Isaac Newton believed light was made up of particles.
  • Discovered a new planet, Uranus, (reported on 22nd January 1673)... 100 years before it was accidentally re-discovered in 1781.
  • Discovered that sound could travel along a wire and around corners.
  • Hooke discovered and proved that the comet seen in 1665 was the same one seen in 1618, Haley's comet.
  • Designed the first equatorial quadrant which aided astronomical observations.
  • First to observe and record the existence of sun spots.
  • Proposed the first concepts of evolution in rudimentary form.
  • Hooke was Britain's first professional experimental scientist.
