Chronology

1635 July 18 - Robert was born in Freshwater, Isle of Wight. His father was Rev John Hooke. Enjoyed making mechanical toys during childhood.
1648 Father dies in October. Goes to London and enters Westminster School.
1653 Joins Christ Church, Oxford. Became friends with Christopher Wren, mathematician.
1655 Studies astronomy with Seth Ward. Helps Robert Boyle construct air pump.
1658 Apply's the circular pendulum to watches. Discovery of this is unknown untill 1675.
1661 Capillary attraction article is published.
1662 The Royal Society appointed him as Curator of Experiments.
1664 Inferred the rotation of Jupiter, of which he was the first to do. Read astronomical lectures at Gresham College. He found the number of vibrations in musical notes.
1665 Nature of air and relationship to combustion and respiration. Laws of falling bodies. Diving-bells. Telegraphy. Barometric readings related to weather. Invents machine to cut gear-wheels. Professor of Geometry at Gresham College.
  Published Micrographia, which contains: colours of thin plates of mica, black spot in soap bubbles, theory of light as transverse vibrational motion, true nature of combustion, and much more.
1666 Periods of rotation found more than 200 years later due to drawings of Mars. Suggests measuring gravitational force with a pendulum. Shows that center of gravity of the earth and moon describes ellipse around sun. Screw-divided quadrant, anemometer, weather-clock.
1667 Talks about the effect of earthquakes. Hooke and Wren responsible for The Monument to the Great Fire in London. Designs hospital in Bedlam. Explains scintillation of stars.
1669 Attempted to measure parallax of a fixed star.
1672 Diffraction of light paper is published.
1674 Published 'An Attempt to Prove The Motion of the Earth by Observations'. Constructs first Gregorian telescope.
1676 Principles of spiral springs published. Accused of being "a trafficker in intelligence".
1678 'Cometa', which deals with the comet of 1677 and includes a statement of the Law of Inverse Squares and the effect of the Sun on comet tails.
1682 Adopts a policy of secrecy to guard against infringements of rights. No longer Secretary to the Royal Society.
1684 Describes system of telegraphy. Invents: odometer, aid to hearing, reflecting quadrant, whell barometer, universal joint, motion of the Sun among the stars.
1687 Grace Hooke, who was his niece/housekeeper dies and effects him profoundly.
1700 Last invention: a marine telescope.
1702 Becomes blind and legs begin to swell. Possibly diabetes.
1703 Robert Hooke dies on March 3rd and is buried at St Helen's Bishopsgate. Reburied in 'North London' sometime in 19th century.
