Hans Christian Orsted was the first the scientist to discover
electromagnetism. Faraday along with his mentor Humphry
Davy,
had the goal to use this discovery to hopefully create an
electric motor. The team created experiments similar
to the figure below. A magnet surrounded in mercury resulted
in a circular force acting on the hanging wire. Faraday
would go
onto work with induced currents. Arguably his greatest
contribution to science was his discovery of mutual
induction. He passed a current
through one wire while it was wrapped around iron with another
wire and discovered that a current was induced in the other wire.
