Hans Christian Orsted was the first the scientist to discover electromagnetism.  Faraday along with his mentor Humphry Davy,
 had the goal to use this discovery to hopefully create an electric motor.  The team created experiments similar
to the figure below.  A magnet surrounded in mercury resulted in a circular force acting on the hanging wire.  Faraday would go
onto work with induced currents.  Arguably his greatest contribution to science was his discovery of  mutual induction.  He passed a current
through one wire while it was wrapped around iron with another wire and discovered that a current was induced in the other wire.
