INTRODUCTION TO MAGNETS:

Magnets themselves are pretty straight forward. They have a north pole and a south pole that interact to make a magnetic field.

magnets           The North Pole and the South Pole attract each other, but if you put a north to North or South to South they repel each other. Try it with some fridge magnets if you want to see for yourself. The magnets will stick to the fridge, but the side that sticks to the fridge will not stick to the "fridge side" of other magnets. They will repel each other!

As you can see in the figure, magnetic field lines always go away from the north pole, and towards the south pole.

What is in a Magnet?

Magnets are made of ferromagnetic materials. These materials include but are not limited to iron, cobalt, and nickel. When these materials are heated they will align with the surrounding magnetic field.

What is the Magnetic Field?
