The Milky Way from Earth
This is the on-edge view of our own galaxy from our position in the edge of the galaxy. We are 26,000-28,000 light years from the galactic center, the bright area in the above picture. With the use of some basic geometry, it shows that
our solar system is located roughly centered on the galactic plane.

top-down view
From a top-down view of the Milky Way, if such an image could be taken, it would show that we are
in one of four main arms of a spiral galaxy. The black circle is our solar system's approximate
location within our galaxy. The top image is an Earth-based view looking towards the
center of the galaxy.
