Nomenclature is a big part of learning about  the physics of sail boats. Some of the more important names are:
  • Mast- The highest spar located in the center of the boat that hold both the sail and the jib.
  • Boom- A lateral spar that is connected to the mast and attaches to the bottom of the sail
  • Rigging- are the wires that support the boats spars (Backstay and headstay).
  • Keel - the bottom fin of the boat which keeps the boat from moving sideways and also lowers the center of gravity of the vessel.
