Dead Reckoning (DR) is used to
determine a boats current location and speed by having
a compass and line of sight to three objects
identifiable on a map. The angles of the three
landmarks, when plotted, will intersect at the boats
current location, as in the three lines plotted above.
If the time is recorded between measurements then the
equation distance=rate*time and be used to to
determine the vessels average cruising speed.
A compass, like the one above, is
commonly used to get fairly accurate angle
measurements. If you were look through the eye
piece it would look something like this:
