Crossover

Crossovers are used by figure skaters and speed skaters alike. A crossover, as shown in the picture to the left, is when a skater's foot crosses over the other. This may seem insignificant and underwhelming, but it is actually a very effective way to pick up speed and maintain it while changing directions. (Hache).

The equation to the right illustrates the relationship between acceleration, velocity and the radius of turn. The tighter the turn, the more speed is maintained. If you have ever taken a tight turn, (in a car, bike, skate etc.) you've probably noticed that there is a force pulling you towards the outside of the turn, and the faster you take the turn, the more force is acting on your body. Thisis how centripetal forces work. On the ice rink, skaters mmust counteract this force by adjusting their center of graity by leaning into the turn and decreasing the angle between the blade of the skate and the surface of the ice. If done correctly, the combination of the centripetal and forward forces will result in a higher skaing speed.
