Basics of Skating

In case you are unfamiliar with the skating techniques, allow me to briefly explain the necessary requirements to skate effectively. First, the skates must have what ice skaters refer to as an “edge”. This is simply the sharp sides of the blade, without it, skating would be highly inefficient. With respect to skates, the direction of motion is perpendicular to the blade. The figure to the right outlines the direction of motion generated with each stride. In order to skate in a forward direction, one must push off of one foot at an angle and force, and with the other foot, push off with an equal force but countering angle. (This negates the lateral direction of the forces, resulting in only forward thrust). The larger the angle, the greater the force generated, however the design of the human body limits the severity of the angle, therefore it is a common practice to keep the angle of the skate at approximately 40°
