Turns Plié Bibliography
Fouettés are one the hardest
moves in dance. It consists of a Ballerina spinning multiple
times on one foot. The ballerina will start by pushing off one
foot to generate torque, but the most difficult part is
maintaining the turns. Friction from the floor and air
resistance want to slow her down, but she is able to keep
going by putting her foot down for a split second and twisting
to generate a new, small amount of torque. To maintain
balance, it is important to keep arms out during this
transition. The key behind all of this is that the other leg
never stops moving. By staying in this motion, the leg is
storing some of the momentum. This momentum goes back into the
body when the Ballerina brings her leg back in, thus she is
able to keep turning multiple times!

Here,
the Ballerina is performing 32 fouettés. Watch her foot, arms, and
leg to see what is discussed above!
