Crude Oil Components

Crude Oil Separation

  • The characteristics of crude oil comes from the diverse chemical hydrocarbon strengths
    • As a result, the various different compounds require differing temperatures to separate
      • The smaller organic compounds (i.e. methane CH4, ethane C2H6, butane C4H10) requires lower temperatures to initiate separation from the crude oil
        • Since the separation temperature is so low, gas separation from crude oil typically occurs as the gas rises from the oil reserves to the surfaces
  • The more viscous oils require higher temperatures to separate, which entails to their sinking in a separator (as shown above)
