Newton’s first law of motion, often referred to as the law of inertia,
states that every object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless compelled to change its state by the action of

an external force. According to NASA “The key point to this law is that if there is no net force resulting from the unbalanced forces acting on an object (if all external forces cancel each other out), then the object will maintain a constant velocity. If the velocity is equal to zero, the object is at rest.” Once an external force is applied, the velocity will change from zero, because of the force. The idea of forces brings Newton’s ideas of motion to his second law.
